First of all, it is important to know the causes of drain blockage. After knowing the root of the problem, you can work out towards finding an effective solution. Sometimes, if you use the plumbing systems more carefully, you can avoid such incidences. If it is a major problem such as the complex drainage systems, you might have to call a plumber. But in case of washroom or kitchen woes regarding clogged drain, there are some solutions which might help you.

What are the Causes of a Clogged Drain?

In case of kitchen pipes, fine particles are allowed to pass through. If you try to pass out the waste matter and other food debris which is meant for the trash can, your drain is more likely to get clogged. While washing utensils, it is quite possible that bigger food particles get stuck to pipes. The oil and grease particles may cause blockage over time. The same might happen in the washroom as well. The residues from soap suds can form deposition on the drain walls. The drain could get blocked by hair strands, items for your daily use, even toilet papers and paper napkins could clog the drains. Over the years, mineral deposition from the water on the inner surface of the drains could also make them clog. The mineral hardens over time and makes it impossible for water to flow freely.

As a result, fluid flow through the drain is cut off and it takes much longer to pass the fluid. In worst cases, the area may overflow and the dirty water may flood the place. Foul odor and unhygienic conditions really make the place messy.

What are the Ways to Unclog a Drain?

Many times, such messy situation of the blocked drain can be prevented by maintaining certain regulations. You need to maintain a proper trash can for the washroom and kitchen. Solid wastes must be thrown in the trash can only. If possible, you can fix a net filter at the mouth of the washroom pipe so that only water is allowed to pass out and the solid debris remains behind. You can follow the same process in your kitchen sink as well. Placing a clean cloth at the mouth of the sink will ensure that water flows out. You can later collect the cloth and dispose it off with the waste and replace with a fresh one.

As for natural methods, there are a lot of ways to unclog drains. You can use common kitchen ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon, salt, hot water etc to unclog drains. They are effective too. In not-so-severe cases, a plunger or firm wire stick may also be useful to clear away the drain. But, in serious cases, it is a time to call the plumber.

It is always better to look for preventive measures than to have to deal with the problem. Drainage problems in your kitchen and washroom could disrupt daily life. It is better if you could identify the damage at the earliest. The more delay is done, the serious the problem becomes. In rest of the cases, you can always call a plumber.
